325 Area Code: History & Time Zone

Do you know where Area Code 325 comes from? Area Code 325 is located in west-central Texas and was created on November 1, 1997. It was formed by splitting area code 915 into two parts. Area code 325 covers the following counties: Brewster, Coke, Crockett, Dickens, Eastland, Fisher, Haskell, Jones, Knox, Mitchell, Nolan, Scurry, Shackelford, Sterling, Stonewall, Taylor, Throckmorton, and Upton. One of the most interesting things about Area Code 325 is its history. Area code 325 is one of the original area codes established in October 1947. At that time, it covered the entire state of Texas. In 1954, area code 214 was created and it covered Dallas and its surrounding suburbs. Over the years, as the population of Dallas grew, it began to encroach on the territory of area code 325.

In 1997, the Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) decided that it was time to split area code 325 into two parts. The southern portion of the old 325 area code would become area code 915, and the northern portion would become area code 325. This was done to provide more area code capacity for the Dallas metro area.

The creation of area code 325 also affected the time zone in west-central Texas. The old 325 area code covered 15 counties in two time zones: Central and Mountain. The creation of area code 915 split the old 325 area code into three time zones: Central, Mountain, and Pacific.
