408 Area Code: History & Time Zone

The 408 area code was created in 1959 and assigned to Santa Clara County in California. At the time, it was one of the largest area codes in the country. The 408 area code covers San Jose, the largest city in the Bay Area, and other parts of Santa Clara County. The 408 area code was originally assigned to the entire Bay Area. But as the Bay Area grew, it became necessary to split the 408 area code into two parts. In 1998, the 669 area code was created to cover the northern part of the Bay Area.

The 408 area code is now in the process of being split again. In March 2017, the 925 area code was created to cover the eastern part of the Bay Area. This means that the 408 area code will soon be split into three parts: the 408 area code, the 925 area code, and the 669 area code.

The 408 area code is also one of the original area codes in the United States. It was one of the first area codes to be assigned to a large metropolitan area. And it is one of the few area codes that still covers its original territory.

The 408 area code is also unique because it is the only area code in the United States that has two time zones. The western part of the 408 area code is in the Pacific Standard Time Zone, while the eastern part is in the Mountain Standard Time Zone.
