In 1954, the 602 area code was created for the Phoenix metropolitan area, and the 520 area code was split between the two regions.

Since then, the 520 area code has been assigned to several different time zones. In 1983, it was assigned to the Mountain Time Zone. In 1987, it was reassigned to the Pacific Time Zone. And in 1995, it was reassigned back to the Mountain Time Zone.

Toll Charges for 520 Area Code Phone Numbers

The Washington State Department of Transportation has announced that toll charges will now apply to all 520 area code phone numbers. This change is expected to generate an additional $1.5 million in revenue annually.In a statement, the department said that the move was necessary in order to help pay for the restoration of the I-5 bridge over the Skagit River. The bridge was damaged in a May 2013 landslide, and repairs are expected to cost upwards of $300 million.

The new toll rates will apply to all calls made within the 520 area code, including calls made within the Seattle metro area. Calls made to or from outside the 520 area code will not be subject to the toll charges.

The new toll rates will go into effect on September 1, 2014.
