Toll Charges for 609 Area Code Phone Numbers As of October 1, 2018, toll charges will apply to all calls made to 609 area code phone numbers, regardless of whether the call is made from a landline or mobile phone.

The change is the result of a ruling by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) that will allow the state's four toll-free area codes to be used for local calls.

The new toll charges will apply to both residential and business phone numbers in the 609 area code, and will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The BPU says the new rule is necessary to help fund the state's 911 emergency response system.
