731 Area Code: History & Time Zone

731 is a Tennessee telephone area code that was created on June 1, 1998, as a split from Area Code 615. The original boundary for 731 ran from the Kentucky border southwest of Hopkinsville to the Alabama border east of Florence. This area code covers the western two-thirds of Middle Tennessee. The 731 area code was originally planned to be an overlay of the 615 area code, but public outcry over the need for another area code in the already congested Nashville metropolitan area forced the Tennessee Public Utility Commission to assign 731 as a separate area code.

The area code was originally assigned to the western third of the state. However, over time, the population in the 731 area code has grown faster than the 615 area code. As a result, the 731 area code now includes the Nashville metropolitan area.

The 731 area code is also unique in that it is the only area code in the United States that is assigned to a time zone (Central Time Zone).

Cities Served by Area Code 731

Area code 731 is one of the oldest area codes in the United States. It was assigned in 1947, and it served the entire state of Tennessee. However, as the state's population grew, the need for more area codes arose. In 2001, area code 615 was split off of 731, and the latter now only serves the western part of the state. There are a number of cities in west Tennessee that are served by area code 731. These include Memphis, Jackson, Dyersburg, and Union City. If you're looking for a phone number in one of these cities, and you don't know the area code, you can easily find it using the area code lookup on AreaCode.com.

One thing to note is that while 731 is the predominant area code in west Tennessee, there are a few small pockets of the state that are served by other area codes. For example, the city of Chattanooga is served by area code 423. If you need to call someone in Chattanooga, you'll need to use that area code.
