Toll Charges for 828 Area Code Phone Numbers

Are you one of the many people who were surprised when they received a bill from their phone company for toll charges incurred while dialing a phone number with an 828 area code? If you are, you're not alone. In early 2016, the phone company I work for began charging toll fees for calls placed to 828 area code numbers. This change caused a lot of confusion and frustration among our customers, and I'm sure it did the same for people living in the 828 area code.

At first, I wasn't sure why the phone company made this change. After doing some research, I discovered that this fee is a result of a recent ruling by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

In 2015, the FCC ruled that phone companies can charge customers for calls placed to certain toll-free numbers. This ruling applies to phone numbers with a toll-free prefix of 800, 888, 877, 866, or 855.

The 828 area code is one of 10 area codes in North Carolina that fall under this ruling. So, if you live in one of these 10 area codes and you call a number with a toll-free prefix of 800, 888, 877, 866, or 855, you may be charged a toll fee.
